Adventures in Community Relations

To provide a context for what the Commission is about, and to acquaint our IFCN partners with a vignette of types of community services and program offerings the UCHRC can make available to them, the Commission presented a short program, entitled, “Adventures in Community Relations,” on Monday, May 17, 2004, at the First Baptist Church in Cranford.

The four-part program opened with a Conflict Mediation Role Play, followed by a quick glimpse of a video which can be used to highlight and open dialogue on prejudice reduction, and presentations of the Commission’s Police & Teens Together (PATT) program (discussed in detail in an upcoming section of this report), and the “Anti-Bullying & Harassment” presentation. As we anticipated, several important community issues concerning prejudice reduction and multi-cultural diversity surfaced in during the presentation. The attendees showed high enthusiasm for the program, and positive communication during the fellowship reception held following the program.

The Commission is planning to present this program at various host sites in the future. Also under discussion is an educational forum that explores ethics in our society -- how they are formed, taught, and handed down from one generation to the next. We’d like to know if these might interest and/or benefit your community.
