Division of Social Services
Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF)

This is a financial assistance program administered by the Division of Social Services TANF unit, which provides cash assistance and Medicaid to families with children 18 years old and under. The program has income and resource levels that are established by Federal regulation.

The TANF Program is composed of three segments which are as follows:

C SEGMENT Under the C Segment, financial assistance is provided to children along with their natural or adoptive parents, or in certain cases relatives with whom they are living, or in cases in which one or both parents may be deceased, absent, or incapacitated.

F SEGMENT Under the F Segment, financial assistance is provided to families with children when both parents are in the home and are not incapacitated. The father in such families must meet the federal definition of unemployment.

N SEGMENT Under the N Segment, families may be eligible for financial assistance when both parents are in the home and are not incapacitated, but are without adequate income or resources for the support of their family.

General Assistance Program

Same as TANF but assistance is granted to individuals not families.
