The Union County Prosecutor’s Office employs approximately 59 Assistant Prosecutors. Their authority is specified in N.J.S.A. 2A:158-18. Pursuant to N.J.S.A. 2A:158-15.1, Assistant Prosecutors serve at the pleasure of the County Prosecutor and must devote their entire time to the duties of their office and may not hold gainful employment, including engaging in the practice of law, while in office. The only exception is that they may, with the permission of the County Prosecutor, be employed with compensation by an institution of higher education in this State for teaching performed on an adjunct or part-time basis as part of a program of law enforcement education.
Assistant Prosecutors must be members of the Bar of the State of New Jersey in good standing. Vacancies occur from time to time in the legal staff.
The office also maintains a staff of paralegal personnel, some of whom are already admitted to the New Jersey Bar. Their title is Legal Intern. These individuals, although not serving as Assistant Prosecutors, perform a variety of law related assignments, including appearing in court as the representative of the State of New Jersey. Although there are exceptions, we generally choose to fill our legal staff vacancies with office employees who have demonstrated their skill in these paralegal positions. Applicants for the position of Legal Intern must be attending their third year of law school or be a graduate of an accredited law school.
Applicants for a position with the legal staff may send a resume and a cover letter explaining their interest in the position and their qualifications to:
