Authorities are looking for help from the public to solve a "horrific" crime that left a Union Township woman with a severe injury last week after someone threw a red brick through the windshield of a car she was riding in on Route 78 in Hillside.

The Union County Crimestoppers Program is offering a cash reward, which could be up to $5,000, for information leading to the apprehension of the person responsible for injuring the 30-year-old woman on September 20.

According to Detective. Sergeant Al Smith of the New Jersey State Police Somerville Station in Bridgewater, the victim was the right front passenger in a 1986 Chevrolet Nova that was traveling westbound in the local lanes of Route 78 at milepost 53.9 when she was struck in the head by the brick after it was tossed from above from a railroad overpass.

"This is outrageous conduct and we are hoping the offer of reward money, which is paid out anonymously using a code number and a 24-hour hotline, will lead us to the person responsible for this tragedy," said Union County Prosecutor Thomas V. Manahan.

The victim, who was transported to the hospital immediately by the woman driving the car, suffered fractures to the skull and right eye orbital socket and is experiencing severe vision problems as she bravely attempts recovery, Manahan said.

Ron Posyton, chairman of the Crimestoppers board of directors, said persons with information about the incident or the person who did it should call

the State Police at (908) 725-0106
or
the Crimestoppers number at (908) 654-TIPS.

"YOU DO NOT HAVE TO GIVE YOUR NAME AND YOU CAN GIVE INFORMATION AND COLLECT YOUR REWARD WITHOUT EVER BEING IDENTIFIED," said Posyton.

This year, the board has already approved thousands of cash awards for anonymous callers, he added.
