The Union County Police Department Traffic Enforcement Unit (TEU) was established in January, 1985. Officers assigned to this specialized Unit are trained in various aspects of traffic enforcement that include; commercial vehicle inspection,

commercial licensing, traffic accident investigation, construction work zone safety, traffic radar, DWI enforcement, and vehicle size and weight limitations.

All officers assigned to the Traffic Enforcement Unit are State of New Jersey licensed Weighmasters. These Officers utilize state of the art, state approved, portable wheel load measurement equipment. Officers enforce various state gross weight and axle weight laws, as well as, registration and inspection laws on trucks.

TEU is a highly effective Unit that helps protect Union County's highways and bridges through the vigorous enforcement program it conducts.

Interacting with municipal police agencies, the Traffic Enforcement Unit participates in many different enforcement and education programs including; DWI/sobriety checkpoints, motor vehicle inspection, radar/speed enforcement, as well as assisting in the investigation of serious/fatal motor vehicle accidents involving commercial vehicles.

The officers assigned to TEU work in pairs and utilize Suburban type trucks for their patrol work. These vehicles are equipped with specialized equipment such as wheel load weighers, hand tools, various measuring devices, flashlights, safety cones, radar, creepers, wheel chocks, reference manuals, and Mobile Data Terminals(computers). All of which enhance the officers ability to better handle any investigation or situation in the field.

All summons and complaints are filed in the Court of the Municipality in which the violation occurred. A certain portion of the revenue generated by these summons is dedicated to repairing and rebuilding the County's road and bridge system.

A primary unit goal consists of education in the form of public awareness. As society and the motoring public grows, laws affecting road use also changes which requires a flexible yet firm approach . These challenges are met by the traffic enforcement unit by assisting business owners under stand how to better safeguard their employees and equipment.
