The Union County Police Department, in conjunction with municipal police agencies, conducts and operates sobriety checkpoints
throughout Union County.

 |
Primarily funded through the State of New Jersey DWI Enforcement Fund, officers set up checkpoints at predetermined locations and conduct an operation that serves two purposes. |
 |
First, it educates the motoring public about current Driving While Intoxicated laws. This is accomplished by the distribution of literature to every motorist passing through the checkpoint as well as newspaper articles relating to the sobriety checkpoint for all to read. |

The second purpose of the sobriety checkpoint is to identify and remove any driver who is operating a vehicle under the influence of drugs or alcohol. |
If an officer suspects a motorist is operating his or her vehicle while impaired, the officer will conduct an investigation which includes field sobriety tests on the motorist. If the officers feels the motorist is under the influence of drugs or alcohol then the motorist is placed under arrest and transported to a Police station for processing. |
 |
All sobriety checkpoints are operated under specific guidelines that are established from case law
in the State of New Jersey. Command officers are assigned to each checkpoint to ensure that all guidelines are adhered to.
