Bicycle Patrol

1927 bicycle patrol

The Union County Police Bicycle Patrol Unit was re-organized in March of 2000 after an absence of many years. With the donation of one bicycle from the Neumann Foundation of Westfield, New Jersey, and the purchase of another, the unit has been a high profile success ever since.

Using a park & ride technique of operation, the bicycle patrol officers ride daily and weekends, weather permitting, patrolling Union County's Parklands in twenty-one different towns and Administrative Complex in Elizabeth. The bicycle patrol unit frequently participates in special recreational events and parades.

The unit also conducts bicycle safety programs for schools upon request. As expected, the Bicycle Patrol Unit has enhanced the patrol and enforcement efforts in the Union County Park System. It has also greatly increased the departments efforts to foster positive public relations. The Bicycle Patrol Officers carry bike safety literature which they distribute to youngsters during the course of their patrol tour. As the warmer weather and summer season approaches, the presence of the Bicycle Patrol Unit in our Union County Parks will impact significantly in the effort to provide quality law enforcement and protection services.
