Located in the Mountainside section of the Watchung Reservation, the Watchung Stable has a long and rich heritage in Central New Jersey. Owned and operated by the County of Union since 1933, its goal is to provide the opportunity to learn how to ride, enhance equestrian skills or just enjoy the natural beauty of the 26 miles of bridle paths that weave through the Reservation, a 2,000-acre forest preserve. |

Facilities |
The Watchung Stable complex consists of a main barn which houses 99 County and privately owned horses, four riding rings, a show ring and an outside hunter course. In addition, this state-of-the-art, barrier-free facility includes an isolation barn, numerous paddocks, a hay and straw storage area and an equipment garage. |
 |
There is also an administration building which features office space, a general assembly room and a tack shop. Ample parking is available. Visitors are welcome to tour the facility at their leisure during regular business hours, or may schedule a guided tour and program designed especially for Girl/Boy Scouts, pre-schoolers, senior citizens, birthday parties or organizations dedicated to serving people with disabilities. A troop assembly room in the administration building can also be rented for organizational use or birthday party space. |
Clubs and Organizations |
The Watchung Riding & Driving Club, Inc. - This organization of adult individuals who ride at the Watchung Stable is dedicated to highlighting programs offered at the facility, as well as raising money for the purchase of stable equipment and show jumps. Each year they sponsor a variety of activities, including riding clinics, hunter paces and horse shows contributing greatly to the programming and services at the facility. The club meets regularly four times a year, with special meetings called as needed.
The Watchung Junior Hunt Club - The purpose of this organization is much the same as that of the Watchung Riding & Driving Club, Inc., but is comprised of junior riders, ages 9 to 17. In recent years, the club has donated a horse to the Stable’s Mounted Troop program, taken trips to horse shows and organized a food drive for the needy during the Troop Horse Show.
The Watchung Stable Auxiliary - Similar in nature to a PTA, this club is comprised primarily of parents of riders in the Mounted Troop Program. An annual fruit sale and other fundraisers are means for the Auxiliary to raise money for the Stable and other rider activities. The Auxiliary has been instrumental in presenting educational seminars and donating horses and related equipment to the Troop program.
