JANUARY

Gentle Yoga Series for Adults ages 18 & older – Tuesday Evenings

7:15 – 8:30 PM

Use nature’s healing powers to help relieve stress and its symptoms.   Relax with a meditative gentle yoga class. Yoga techniques can awaken poise and centered awareness in the midst of everyday life. This is an opportunity to learn and experience Raja yoga techniques for integrating body and mind. Claire M. Bay, yoga instructor certified by the Chopra Center in New York City, will teach and guide you in this new pathway of meditation. Soothing music will enhance the experience. Bring: a yoga mat or pillow if you have one.  Fee for each session: $15 per person for residents of Union County,$20 per person for non-county residents.

February begins the winter workshop series for children & families.  This includes:

  • Toddler Time
  • Two of Us
  • Small Fry Days
  • Afterschool Explorations
  • Trailside Explorers
  • Outdoor Adventure Saturday programs – no pre registration required
  • Mad Science Afterschool Workshops

“Homemade Pasta with 7 Great Sauces”-Cooking for Adults ages 18 & older  February 7- Monday Evening

7:00 – 10:00 PM

Enjoy an evening with Chef David Martone of Classic Thyme Cooking School in Westfield as he guides you through the techniques of making delicious pasta and wonderful sauces. Bring with you your appetite as well as your favorite bottle of wine as you learn how to prepare:


  • · Pasta with fresh garden tomatoes, oil, garlic and basil
  • · Fresh cooked cherry tomato sauce
  • · Gnocchi with Basilico Sauce
  • · Spinach ravioli with sage butter and walnut sauce
  • · Light orange lemon cream sauce with pink peppercorns
  • · Spicy pink sauce with green olives, ground pork and pepperoncini
  • · Sugo all’Amatriciana

Saturday Outdoor Adventures: Families with children of all ages are invited to take part in theme hikes/nature related talks.  Pre-registration is not required.  Dress appropriately for the program and the weather.  For scout programs, please see our group brochure. Admission is a donation. Programs begin at 10 a.m. at the Visitor Center and last approximately 45 minutes unless otherwise noted.

Feb. 5    Winter Seasonal – Explore the Watchung Reservation in winter.  Learn how to identify trees without their leaves and hike the nursery trails to search for deer paths, rabbit tracks and other animal signs. 10 a.m.


Feb. 26  Tracking 101 – Learn to identify the tracks of the common animals that inhabit the Watchung Reserevation.  Discover the best places to look for tracks and take a walk to find out who has been “hiking” around Trailside.   10 a.m.


February 12-25, 2011Summer Camp Lottery Drawing for Residents of Union CountyA lottery system will be used for the 2011 camp registration.  Union County residents are invited to stop by the  Trailside Visitor Center between February 12-25 from 12-5 PM daily, or until numbers run out, to draw a number which will indicate the position on line for summer camp registration on March 5, 2011.  Proof of residency will be required.  Call 908-789-3670 for details.


February FestivitiesFebruary 17 – 22 – Special programs for adults, families and children during the President’s holiday vacation days.  Call Trailside at 908-789-3670 for more information.  Pre-registration required for all workshops.  Workshops are recommended for families with children ages 5 and older.


Feb. 17 Lecture:  All About Owls                                           7-8 p.m.

Join Lauren Butcher, Education Director of the Raptor Trust in Millington, for an in-depth look at the lives of these mysterious and sometimes misunderstood nocturnal birds of prey.  Learn about the special adaptations that make owls such effective nighttime hunters and get to know the eight species of owls that can be found right here in New Jersey.  Meet one of the center’s non- releasable avian ambassador owls.

Fee: $8/person for Union County residents, $10/person for non-county residents. 


Feb. 19 Snakes & Turtles of NJ                                              10-11 a.m.

Investigate the similarities and differences of reptiles.  Hold turtle shells and feel a shed skin from a snake.  Learn the difference between a land tortoise and a water turtle.  Then meet live snakes and turtles from Trailside’s collection.

Fee: $5/person for Union County residents, $6/person for non-county residents.

Feb. 19 The Journey of Sap to Syrup                                  1-2:30 p.m.

See how 100% real maple syrup is made from the sap of a sugar maple tree. Find out what equipment is needed to collect sap and take part in a taste test to see if you can identify the real thing.

Fee: $5/person for Union County residents, $6/person for non-county residents.


Feb. 19       Nature’s Scavenger Hunt                                         3-4 p.m.

Using Trailside’s state-of-the-art exhibits, work with your family to answer questions about plants, animals and the natural history of the Watchung Reservation.  Discover what “Nomahegan” means in the Lenape language, which bird built its nest atop a tulip tree snag and which mammal is hunting for crayfish. 

Fee: $5/person for Union County residents, $6/person for non-county residents.


Feb. 21 The Journey of Sap to Syrup                                  10-11:30 a.m.

See how 100% real maple syrup is made from the sap of a sugar maple tree. Find out what equipment is needed to collect sap and take part in a taste test to see if you can identify the real thing.

Fee: $5/person for Union County residents, $6/person for non-county residents.


Feb. 21       Matinee – “Up Up and Away” with Mad Science of West NJ

1:30-2:15 p.m.

The audience will be captivated with eye-popping demonstrations and experiments that show how exciting science can be.  There will be plenty of opportunity for hands-on audience participation in this event.  Have fun learning about the three states of matter, air pressure, a hot air balloon, the Mad Science Hovercraft, the Big Sneeze demonstration and much more! Recommended for children ages 4 and up. Space is limited.  Tickets go on sale at 1 PM Monday, Feb. 21 at the Visitor Service Desk.  No strollers please.     Fee: $4/person.

Feb. 21       Feed the Birds                                                           3-4 p.m.

Take a short walk outdoors to look for our feathered friends and find out how they are coping with the cold winter weather.  Visit the Bird Viewing Area and help the naturalist fill the feeders.  Enjoy watching which birds come to eat and learn to identify them by sight and sound.  Find out about the different types of seed used to attract birds and make a bird feeder to take home.  

Fee: $5/person for Union County residents, $6/person for non-county residents.

Feb. 22 A Walk In Winter                                                     3-4 p.m.

Discover the many strategies of survival used by plants and animals during the cold winter months.  Hike through the nursery to look for deer paths, rabbit tracks and other animal signs.  Conclude our hike around a warm campfire for some hot chocolate and marshmallows.

Fee: $5/person for Union County residents, $6/person for non-county residents.

MARCH

3/7/11 Beginning on March 7, 2011 Trailside Nature and Science Center summer camp registration is open to all general public, including non-county residents.  No lottery tickets required.   12 – 4:45 PM daily until classes fill. Call Trailside at 908-789-3670 for information.


3/12/11 STAR PARTY! - Learn about the stunning winter night sky, in simple language and beautiful astrophotography.  Then get the latest news of NASA’s Messenger Mission to Mercury in Trailside’s auditorium.  Bundle up and go outside to see the ORION NEBULA (the birthplace of stars), the glorious PLEIADES, and SATURN later in the evening.  Members of Amateur Astronomers Inc. (AAI) from Sperry Observatory in   Cranford will have telescopes and binoculars available for public viewing.  Pre-registration preferred, but walk-ins welcome as space permits. Dress warmly!  Meet:  Trailside Visitor Center.

Donations requested.  6-10 PM

Mar. 12      Empty Nests – Visit the winter woods to look for nests made by robins, cardinals and catbirds. Learn when birds build nests and why they don’t use them during winter.  Walk through Trailside’s state of the art exhibits in search of nests made by the red-shouldered hawk, ovenbird and black and white warbler.  10 a.m.

Mar. 26      Early Spring Hike – With spring almost here, our hiking theme today is green.  Hike the Green Trail in search of budding leaves, evergreen trees, ferns, moss and other greenery.  10 a.m.


APRIL

April begins the Spring workshop series for children, families and adults.  This includes:

5/7/11              Astronomy Day with members of the Amateur Astronomers Inc. (AAI) from Sperry Observatory in Cranford


5/1/11   Wild Earth Fest – 11 AM – 5 PM.  Rain or Shine.  Live animal demonstrations, educational displays, food vendors and family activities for all ages!  Informational tables on organic foods, recycling, water conservation and much more!  Adults and children will enjoy music, live animals, giveaways, eco-art and recycling Olympics.  Admission is $3 per person with children ages 6 and under free.  “Get your green on…”

5/15/11            Garden Fair – Union County Master Gardner’s plant sale and

workshop.  12-5 p.m.
