Assisted Living promotes a resident’s self-direction and participation in decisions that emphasize individuality, privacy, dignity and choice in homelike surroundings
The three Assisted Living settings in New Jersey are:
Assisted Living Residence – is a facility licensed by the Department of Health and Senior Services to provide apartment-style living and congregate dining and to assure that assisted living services are available when needed. Apartment units offer, at a minimum, one unfurnished room, a private bathroom, a kitchenette and a lockable door on the unit entrance. Units are single or double occupancy. An individual pays room and board of $601.55 per month.
Comprehensive Personal Care Home – is a residential facility licensed by the Department of Health and Senior Services to provide room and board and to assure that assisted living services are available when needed. Residential units in this type of facility are typically shared occupancy but have no more than two residents and have a lockable door on the unit entrance. Bathrooms are usually shared and congregate dining is provided. The Room and Board rate is set annually by the State Department of Health and Senior Services.
Assisted Living Program – a package that includes nursing and personal care to be provided by an agency licensed by the Department of Health and Senior Services. This program will be provided only to individuals residing in publicly subsidized housing. An individual continues to be responsible for rent, food and other household expenses.
Eligibility Criteria:
Resident of New Jersey
65 years or older, or
Is between 21 and 54 years of age and determined disabled by the Social Security Administration or Division of Medical Assistance and Health Services (Medicaid)
Receives Supplemental Security Income or
Is determined eligible for Medical Assistance Only Program (MAO) or NJ Care Program by county Welfare Agency/Board of Social Services in the county of the individual’s residence. Monthly income may not exceed $1,911. For MAO, assets must be equal to or less than $2,000. Married couples apply for benefit screening.
Room and Board rate is set annually by the State Department of
